Hi every one,
welcome to Snoopy 101 Maurice Sendak Challenge, my name is Brian David your host. Although I am no expert in this...
Maurice Sendak
Born June 10, 1928 lived in New York City came from a family of Polish Immigrants. Stricken as a child with illness coming from a small village in Warsaw, Sendak found plenty of time to draw. Sendak went on to become an award winning illustrator Author and is considered to be a main force in the evolution of children's literature since 1960.
He is known by many to be the first artist to deal openly with the emotions of children by way of his drawings. In 1963 Sendak achieved great success and gained international acclaim as he wrote and drew ''Where The Wild Things Are" This book initially caused controversy as some adults thought his characters to be too scary for kids. None the less, it quickly became popular and has since sold millions of copies around the globe.
My Challenge
I encourage all levels of skill to participate!
Simply draw one of the references I have provided of Sendak's illustrations, or feel free to use your own reference or create your very own Sendak Characters. Please no computer graphics all drawings must be hand drawn. You may use your computer for color or text if you wish but please post your original drawing first.
Hope you all enjoy this challenge,
Happy drawings,
Brian.
Great challenge, Bri-guy.. If I ever get moved in and find all my art stuff, I may give this a try. I m just in a time crunch right now. I know that you know, what that is like.

No I won't be entering because it looks way beyond me and that would put unneeded stress on myself. But I want to comment on your characters. No wonder you you received awards. They have so much depth. You can enter the character and spend ages just thinking about him or who ever.I just did that!!! Kids books are far better than adults just for the fact adult books have no pictures!! I just had to comment on your drawings. They blow me away but they they are also inspirational to me to keep drawing Joanna

Hey thanks
Cyn Kid ...Oh yes I know the feeling..I made it all winter with out getting sick and now I caught a flu so it gave me some time to rest and draw..I miss your drawings and talents so hope you get settled.
Hi
Joanna , I bet Sendak would appreciate your wonderful comments. Some of his characters are very life like and I am sure a challenge to draw for many of us myself included. A reminder this challenge is open to
all levels of skill , so I hope yet still to inspire you to participate.

Hi All,
I really like Sendak's drawing titled " Chicken Soup January" so I thought I would give it a try,
and since I have been fighting a flu I have had plenty of it...
Sketched with 2H, 6B and chalk pencils.

Do you know what they use to glaze the tiles you are talking about? I also paint ceramics and would love to know what type of glazes would give this look, if you by chance know. Maybe, I can make a tile to look just like my drawing!
Thanks for the compliment! I really appreciate it.

But maybe Clara can help you out, since her sister and cousin have experience on tiles.

Thank you. I wonder if it's just the color that makes it resemble the portugese tiles, or if there is a special type of glaze that is used.....I'm just curious

. I do appreciate the comments~

Yes, Sarah, your drawing resembled a Portuguese ceramic tile because of the color. The antique Portuguese ceramic tiles (called Azulejos) were all painted mostly in blue (that´s why it is called
Azulejo, because the portuguese word for blue is
Azul). And they are indeed all glazed. The glaze is a characteristic of the "Azulejos", but I really don´t know what type of glaze it is. You can check some photos and the history of the Azulejos in this link:
http://www.golisbon.com/culture/azulejos.html.
Cheers,
Sonia.
