Embarrassed at times tried the Medusa
sketched in pencil and painted with ink and pen on A4
Click to view attachmentI think it's Beautiful! you rally captured the look of the piece. I am curious what you mean in "ink and pen" What is the difference? Is the ink loose, like paint?
Do you use a brush to apply or some other tool? Just curious. It sounds so interesting, and I am always looking for new mediums to try.
Again, you did a great job, please don't be embarrassed~!

Sarah, ink is usually applied to a surface in two ways: with a pen and it's called ink and pen and with a brush and it's usually called Chinese brush or sumi-e(japanese painting).Take a look at my thread

Thanks! That's kind of what I thought, but I began questioning myself when I read "ink and pen" . Thanks for answering me. I do appreciate it

Welcome, Sarah and keep in mind trying different media is fun and instructive; it teaches you good skills and also you get experience with more media.
You can also decide better which is for you and what results you obtain with every medium.
The one that I found that strengthens my drawing abilities is charcoal and basically learning to draw values is way easier in charcoal than graphite.
If you look in my gallery under charcoal you will see how much progress I made in just 2 months.

Hey!
I'm a new member here at Drawspace and this is my first posting here.
I got excited about the challenge and wanted to try it out, it's a great way of learning!
This is my first real serious portrait, I really want to learn how to shade skin tone and draw hair in a realistic way.
I know it's a bit off but I learned a lot doing it.
I tried crosshatching at first but the result wasn't pleasing at all so I went for the blender for this final result.
I would love to hear what you have to say about it, constructive critisism is where you learn.

Kalinga, welcome to DS and to this challenge. It's always learning on this site but especially on challenges we really grow doing them. Your drawing is very good and the values are excellent.Only that her eyes seem blue or green in your drawing when in the picture are the darkest value. Also Being a Chinese she must have black or brown eyes.
I think both versions of the drawing are fine. Crosshatching is nicely done in your second image and you should be proud with your work.
Thanks for joining in.

Raidor your progress is obvious on this portrait and can't wait to see it ready.
One thing, Raidor about your portraits. You shade by blending for the skin tones. That is done and many portraits on this site or elsewhere you may find with blending for skin tones. I myself in the beginning of my drawing, last year used to blend with a cotton ball. While this method brings some realism into the skin texture, it's not going to make you grow artistically, and you never really develop skills for shading like a professional. One must try to learn hatching, crosshatching, circulism, and other types of shading with the pencil rather than a blender.Only in this way you can really progress in graphite. My suggestion to you is to try put aside the blending tools and be bold and use just the pencil.
Remember by pencil strokes you can achieve 3D effects that are not possible by blending.
For charcoal drawing see the lesson on shading
Coming out of the darkThe way I did the Chinese girl in charcoal was actually applying this lesson.

Hi Antonio, I am really sorry for taking so much time but my Pc had a crash and I waited for 2 hours to recover its functions.
Here is the answer to your request.
First the drawing is beautiful and shows your artistic sensitivity in rendering beauty. Now is well shaded and well proportioned: what it needs still is a touch up.
In this demonstration below you have your original drawing and my scan of your drawing + the touch up for values, especially dark. Dark is very important in a drawing whenever it exists needs to be correctly rendered. In our case the darkest part of the face are the eyes and next the hair which is actually medium dark.
I emphasized that in my demo and I hope you have a clue to how you can work from here. Just bring your darkest pencil, I used a General's #555 but any dark graphite pencil will do for the eyes and medium dark for the hair. Note that in her dress the fur is dark too.
So now you have a balanced drawing with all values in place.

Hi Elena,
First I would like to thank for their considerations will be of great value to me, I have much to learn and hopefully improve even more.
Thank you for your attention to me.
Greetings.

Elena - Thank you very much! I see your point in the eye color, of course they should be way darker! I guess I wanted to work on the irises and make them look nice and forgetting about the color. Lesson learned, thanks again!

Hi all, some really fantastic drawings this week, well done.
I thought I'd have a go at the Medusa but I've been quite busy and have only managed to do the initial drawing so far.
Hopefully I'll be able to finish it during the weekend, but if not this will have to be this weeks effort.
Great pictures Elena.

Dear friends, I am speechless at your beautiful works of art.I will have to admire them peacefully during my coffee session and give you individual feedback. It's amazing the number of talents this challenge engaged and my pictures inspired outstanding works. We should all celebrate this week performance with a Hall of Fame that i used to add at the end of my chalenges to show off the works.
