Full Version: Weekly drawing challenge hosts
Drawspace > General > General discussion
paulette4
Hello everyone,
My name is Paulette, I am going to take over managing this topic for Jeanette.
The one week challenges were in the lead on the poll so we will stay with that for right now. Of course I will be open to new suggestions.

The process of hosting is simple. Find 3 -5 reference images. The images should be your own photographs that are copyright free. Keep in mind artistic composition, contrast and clarity when choosing images for drawing.

The Drawing Challenges will be for a one week period.

Once you have decided on your photos, upload them onto your Drawing Challenge thread and monitor the challenge during the week. Its that simple.

I am keeping the schedule as is. I thought we would go in 2 month blocks and have a couple of people in reserve, just in case something comes up for someone. Listings with a line through them indicate drawing challenges that have been completed. People can however still participate in them and add drawings if they wish.

I will put up the next list to be filled at the end of Feb.

December 24 - January 6 - Brian David
January 7 - January 13 - UKartist
January 14 - January 20- Markita
January 21 - January 27 - Paulette4
January 27 - February 3 - Venus
February 4 - February 10 - Farfallina
February 11 - February 17- Painter 48

tongue.gif Paulette,
I know there was poll and everything where people posted and put what they would prefer for how long the challenge would be ran. I also noticed that since the challenge has switched to a week that it doesn't seem like many people are participating any longer. So maybe two weeks should be back in order soon? It seemed like people had more time to get the pictures completed and alot more participated. Just a suggestion and people are welcome to voice their opinions. Or maybe we should start a thread and run another poll? Thanks!!!

Hi everyone,
With all the new things going on here it is getting very busy. Please post your opinions on one week versus two week challenges.
Thank You
Paulette

tongue.gif Paulette, I vote 2 weeks!!! wub.gif

I vote two weeks, too. biggrin.gif
With the new forensic challenge and sketching from life lists, lessons to work on and all, it would be nice to have more time.

I prefer one week drawing challenges. At the second week, the number of people participating drops significantly. I would also like to see just one image chosen, not a variety. Yes, not everyone will like it, but that's part of the challenge.

There are a number of drawing activities taking place and there will be more as time goes by. That means that at some point people may have to choose which they want to participate in.

The variety of threads is to ensure that there is something for everyone.

I agree with Jeanette in the sense that one photograph would make it interesting because you could see so many different takes on the same picture. I do however find that one week is a little hard, especially when trying to do other challenges and personal stuff. That's my opinion.
Venus
tongue.gif Gramma Jeanette, I do believe I also like that idea for the draw challenge too. It was hard trying not to use all of the WetCanvas reference photos to use for the new challenge because I didn't have any permission to use them here. So needless to say I had to go through all of my photos to find those and while they aren't bad I haven't been out with the camera to take pictures because of the cold and grayness of WINTER....brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. wub.gif
kim1963
I like the idea of the one week one picture ....we are offering many challenges on here and we want to keep people interested ..smile.gif

I like one week several pictures. I think that if you have only one picture for everyone you won't get as much participation. It could be too much of a challenge for some people or just too boring for some and then they just won't join in. I know you can't please everyone.

Example: I haven't participated in the "Sketching From Life" thread because I don't particularly like sketching. I was bored last night and did some sketching and posted them. That doesn't mean that I will continue to sketch however.

I personally won't join in a challenge if the pictures don't appeal to me. If it changes to one picture, I certainly don't want to draw animals all the time. Its not that I can't or anything, I just really don't enjoy drawing them. I don't want to draw a portrait every week either or a landscape etc. So by limiting the number of pictures I think it would limit the participation. I know it would limit mine.

Sorry to get on the soapbox but its just my humble opinion. biggrin.gif
Nellie
Two weeks, but I think people can choose, one or two, and participate as they wish.
racedolls
i like the one picture and one week challenge. if we stick with the different pictures then maybe it should go two weeks. but there is more challenges to participate in also.

I think the purpose of the various challenges is to keep people motivated and give them something interesting to draw - interesting for them that is. Like Joanie, I find it hard to draw something that does not appeal to me or even something that I can't see very clearly.

That is one reason why I don't agree with a one picture challenge. The other reason has also been mentioned by someone else... some might feel put off attempting the same subject as others they perceive as having more expertise than themselves. There is of course absolutely no reason to feel this way but human nature is what it is.

In my opinion the best sort of challenge is one that offers something at different levels of difficulty in different themes that appeal to the widest number of people.

As for it being a weekly or bi-weekly event, it doesn't make much difference to me personally though I appreciate that people with other commitments might have less time. In the poll I voted for once a week...but seeing how some people feel rushed maybe once every two weeks is better.

I know there are several challenges going on but I have always thought of the Drawing Challenge is the more important one. Some very lovely drawings have come out of it ... so maybe we really should be giving people more time to think, research and have enough time to come up with something really worthwhile.

Just my two cents on this. smile.gif
Venus
tongue.gif I actually agree with everyone to an extent. I rarely participate in the sketching from life but do try to do all od the draw challenges. I think there was one that I wasn't able to participate in. I like having a variety of pictures to choose from. If it went to one I do believe that it stop alot of people from participating and agree there should be mulitple choices as far as picture references go.

Jeanette I was thinking on the lines of participant host and weekly drawing challenges of a clue game, kinda like the forensic artist thread but non human. Someone gives a description of something and everyone draws what they think it is. Then at the end of the week we or whoever, post a picture of what it is. I came up with the idea before the forensic class but just didn't say anything about it, or I may have mentioned it to Brenda, don't remember. blush.gif

What about multiple pictures and a... style promp? Like Brian did, with the cartoons. Just a thought.

And 10 days, maybe? smile.gif

Two weeks, more pics. That's what I'd like.

This way you involve more people that are appealed by different subjects and let them take it easy as well. There are several activity going on here, not need to list them all, and sometimes we have to choose one or two and discard others. It's not a rule to partecipate in everything. That's the good service we give each other: any time we log in we can find different drawing proposal to get involved in.
But it doesn't have to become a job! I don't want to put the drawing challenges in my work time schedule. I just want to wander through the threads, pick up what I like and start drawing. That's all and it's all fun.

Two weeks challenge also give more time to get a bunch of pics for hosting. And if we don't have them in the closet we can go out for some shots.

By the way, all the hosts have done such a wonderful job. Thanks. Hope to host a week soon or later.

Hi all, as a newcomer to the site I can see pro's and con's for all arguments put forward, so from a purely personal point of view I would vote for multiple pictures and two weeks. I also paint in watercolours and do encaustic painting so find it hard to fit everything in - my problem of course, but I really would like to join in these challenges!

BTW: I would also like to volunteer my services as a host for the challenges!

Hi Sylvia and Poldone,
You're both welcome to take a challenge week. I won't start filling out a new list till march. Before I do that I will decide how I am going to run it. One or two weeks, one or more pics etc.
I will be gone this week, but will check up on everyones views when I get back.

Choices choices lol ... I really dont care how they do it .. I enjoy doing it .. they do make a valid point ,, giving only one picture ...limits interest .
sketchysyl
Just a thought for those who voted for a one picture challenge - why not have it as a one picture contest? Perhaps a winner's badge or something could be designed for those who win? Sylvia

Hi All,

Maybe I am old fashioned but I kind of like how the challenges were when they first started.....and that is every 2 weeks with 3 reference pictures. I enjoyed doing a Part 2 challenge....Many others seemed to enjoy it.... I have many more idea's for that .....that is if it will be considered again, it was FUN....and a fun way to practice our skills and iteract with fellow artists.. And to be honest, I also miss Jeanette being our host for some of the challenges along with some of the others who took part in the early one's . Well that's my 2 cents.........and Snoopy is on my side....lol... IPB Image Brain.

Okay folks here are my thoughts on this. The info you have given me is mixed up pretty evenly. So I am thinking I am going to give you a mixed up challenge.

#1 the challenge should be started weekly by a new host.
-this will keep the interest at a high level, participation does drop off after the first week

#2 the challenge will last two weeks and be monitored by the host for that two week time period.
-this will encourage people who do not have the time to finish a piece in one week to go ahead and post their picture in the second week and not feel left out. If a host cannot put in two weeks, there are plenty of us that can pick up the slack on the second week.

#3 three pictures should be picked by the host (topics should be varied)
-we want to keep the interest high and I believe that there will be some single picture topics coming up with Kim

#4 special topics can be picked (ie. briandavid's make a cartoon character)
-I agree with Brian people were very interested in this, maybe it can be a separate thread at sometime, but in the mean time it can dwell here. eg. fantasy, skills work, advertisement, etc.

These are my thoughts at this time I'll hear everybody out on how you feel about it. Let me have it. biggrin.gif

smile.gif Paulette, as for the cartoon ideas Brian David came up with we are going to start a new thread for just cartoons. A challenge of sorts with references to make up your own cartoon character and background. So I don't think that it needs to be an issue for the regular draw challenge. Also, there is going to be another challenge for focusing on just drawing animals as well for people who are having a difficult time with hair and noses and other sorts of difficulty that Kim is going to be hosting. For your Drawing Challenge I would vote for #2 and #3. I will still be participating in as many as I can. I make it a habit to do the weekly challenges. tongue.gif Now I will be participating in 3 which will only make my drawing that much better. wub.gif
painter48
Two weeks with only three pictures is really boring...........(no offense intended). There were some people who drew three pictures this week in the Drawing challenge. I know I did. I understand that some folks don't have as much time as others so if they don't get done they can still post their drawings in the old Drawing challenge thread. There's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes I don't have time to draw any of the pictures or I just don't like any of the pictures or they are poor quality pictures. So I miss a week. Big deal. LOL tongue.gif

So if you limit the challenge to 3 drawings then the stipulation would be no animals, people, or cartoons as there will be drawing threads for these three categories? That would leave the challenges to only include landscapes, still life, florals and misc.?

This sounds like its starting to get way too complicated............or am I not really understanding it?????

Shall I make it more complicated?........I would like to see watercolor pencils (wet or dry) included in the drawing challenges. IMHO

My vote is to put it back the way Jeanette set it up and if everyone doesn't like it then too bad. Don't participate. Because you are not going to be able to please everyone!

kim1963
I agree joanie .....this is one of the most favorite challenges ...I think Jeantte set it up fine with choices and not sure about the weeks to get it done .. I think it can be of anything the host chooses like before ...I think paulette doing a great job and having a new host each turnover is a good idea .. its fun to post your own images and see what people come up with ....smile.gif
Venus
biggrin.gif LOL...now I am confused..Lets leave the regular challenge as it is. Its perfect and just because there are other threads being started for a certain area doesn't mean you have to refrain from using them in the drawing challenge. The other threads idea was just to get more people included in areas they like drawing. They were not intended to step on anyones toes or to take away from any of the other challenges. wub.gif
paulette4
Actually if you look the only change I want to make is to leave the the last challenge pinned for an extra week so people can continue to post if it takes more than one week to finish. People seem to think once it is not pinned that they can no longer post there. Of course that might make the pinned area too crowded??? To me the challenge as is, is popular and well used at this time.
Paulette
kim1963
I agree paulette .... and your idea is a good one .. :0
Pammy
wacko.gif I'm so confused! So drawing challenges will be for one week pinned...but in reality will last for 2 weeks? And allowances will be made for other mediums besides pencil? Someone draw me a map please laugh.gif or just post a complete concise set of rules for me LOL
