Hello, I am Carol, This will be my first time as host for this week, inviting you to show off your skills here and in the gallery by sketching or drawing one or more of these pictures.

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavors to some form of drawing: graphite, colored pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in grey scale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

Here are my photos.

1.Duke.... my Rotteweiler/Lab mix

2.Hands .. My friend John and his son Grayson

3.My outside work in the yard hat...

4.Oil Lantern

5.Rawhide Roping Stirrup

6. Wood spoke wheel

Thanks to the hostess for the interesting pictures. I have tried a very quick watercolour of the hands(have to work on the music trade) - I am far from the thought of showing "how to do' - sure, you'll do better than me, Kay. Still, skin colour is really difficult to do in watercolour without ruining the transparency of the media, and is a challenge.

Thank you all for the kind words!
Sorry to hear about your fever, Kay! Get better soon. Yesterday with the astronomic spring coming it snowed - in the morning I could see white flowers on my window.

I finally got my children (Son, husband and puppy) to bed so that I could finish this piece.

My husband chose this one for me to do first...He wanted me to change the background however, so I tried to make it look like it was leaning against wood (Not sure if I achieved it or not) but now that I did, I realize I didn't take into consideration the shadows that the original background made. All of which should have been removed from this drawing, but I wasn't thinking. rolleyes.gif

....I know I talk too much, cool.gif so here it is:

I love your Stirrup Drawing, Raidor! I love the look that the pen and ink gives it! Very nice. biggrin.gif
oliverandjazz
Sarah that wheel is super...what a great job, raidor yours too is wonderful..i am running behind and slow. you guys are awesome and thanks for the get wells...
texaslady-59
Sarah ...I agree with your hubby.. The trellis behind the wheel was not exactly old west looking .. However anything can be changed .. I never noticed the shadows Sarah til you pointed it out .. It still looks awesome shaded or not.. The wheels tones gives it the "back in time" feeling....

Raidor...I think the Rawhide Stirrup turned out super.. All the lines in that wood ( had to take you all day ) and the oldness of that stirrup impresses me ..I am so thrilled you stayed with it .. I know it had to present some challenges for you.. But we are all here to push ourselves in to something out of the ordinary..
Thanks so much for your participation.. I am going to try and get some done today.. I am still trying to get the Card trade finished up ,, will put them on hold for a few days.. .
Ya'll have a great Sunday !!
Carol

Raidor

Thanks , Carol, for the compliment smile.gif

have a funny sunday

Yeehawww Elena .. Guess we tend to post what is around us and where we have been ..My next (hopefully ) host..I will get a few old windmills and barns in the mix. I didn't want to get too stupid with Rustic my first time out of the shoot.. trial and error..

Hope to see some Elena Texan Art soon..

I love your Easter Thread .. and the concept of Easter Cards.!!!. I will get one started soon.. Lovely colorful Easter !!

Raidor ,thanks so much for the compliment biggrin.gif
ElenaM
Carol, Rustic subjects are fine, we don't get them everyday, and I think you must take pictures of all stuff you have there and makes an intersting subject for drawing. So, don't worry, yiour theme is great. I love it!
I am also in the color mood, so I will try at least one easter card first, before getting to the hat.
texaslady-59
another 2 for this challenge.. Going to go and try my hand at those Elena's Easter thoughts..
Thanks Elena.. I'll be watching your thread along with Kay's naughty Leprechaun draws.. ..

Here is my attempt at a color piece. I have never used colored pencils before, but like Elena, I was in the "color mood" so I stole my teenage brothers colored pencils.....

I printed a copy of my original drawing of the wheel, and added color.

What do you all think? Any advise? Like I said, color is not my thing usually, so any help would be great!

Sarah
ElenaM
Sarah, I like it. It's a colorized drawing.Printed image on a drawing pad I used in oil pastels from my own previous drawing or painting. It is called underpainting and it is done in oil, acrylic, oil pastels paintings but not printed but painted before you add the respective medium. In color pencils as they don't mix with graphite, one must draw directly in Cp. But in a challenge anything goes as is more open to experimenting. For colored pencils drawing, check out Jeanette's thread on CP and also the animal cp workshop of last november.

Thanks for the references. I will have to check them out! tongue.gif

I agree with everything you said....I just wanted to play around...Actually, I thought it was going to turn out horrible, or else I might have put a little more time into it.
I haven't had much time today to draw, or else I might have started from scratch.
Also, my brothers cp's are as cheap as they get! I think he bought them to use for a geography project one time, but hasn't used them since!

Thanks for the compliment though. I have already put it in a cheap frame I had laying around and put it in the guest bedroom at my house! I too live in Texas, and as Carol said, we Texan's tend to have a lot of "rustic / country" stuff. The wheel picture goes perfectly with the decor in the guest room.
texaslady-59

Sarah I am like you Time comes in spurts so I have to do as much as I can with what I have available.... next week is a busy work week and all I will have time for is mostly looking in on the new drawings..Maybe squeeze in a few cards at work when no one is looking..

I like the color version of your Wheel very much ..so nice to hear you are going to use it in your decor...

If you have never used the Derwent water color pencils and Inktense pencils you will be surprised how well they go down on your paper..I love them and combine them with my watercolor brushes..

Where in Texas are you?.. I live near Wichita Falls.. Gilbert ( lancruz ) is also from Texas .. Near Fort Worth..

I am about 30 minutes south east of Austin. I really don't know where Wichita Falls, but I think it's probably close to me.

Thanks for the info on the pencils. I am going to go get some more stuff to work with pretty soon, so I will add those to my list of things to get~

...p.s. I hope you can sneak some cards at work....Just don't get caught~ lol

You're going to love them...The Inktense pencils are my favorites..
Wichita Falls is just about the middle distance between Fort Worth and Amarillo.. I am 50 miles west of Wichita Falls.. and about 20 miles from the Oklahoma border.. Litttle ole bitty town off 287... you know the ones.. everyone here knows you whether you like it or not..
I'll be super sneaky tomorrow.. Ha !

Ok. I didn't do any bunny easter card. I tried graphite, horrible day for it and hats. First the drawing was bad, next the scanner died on me, I took a photo of my sketch, but when to download it , the Pc couldn't recognize the program. So I spent an hour for a bad drawing and two on the tools and ended up with no image to show . Wish me luck with my dino equipment.

Big Bad Bummer Jeanne.. Bet it was from all that scanning you did last week.. You were on fire with your Challenge Week.. Hope you get it back hittin' all cylinders real soon !!
Let it cool down and rest.. Poor things.. If we keep this up we may have to get Heavy Duty Industrial Scanners ! The Energizer Bunny must be tired of keeping up with these prehistoric PC's..mean time I'll keep fingers and toes crossed even if it hurts..

Finally, the bad sketch, bad picture taken in bad light is here.
Texan lady you should admit some witchcraft from Witchita falls fell on me from that hat and some Texan spirits messed up my drawing and PC laugh.gif
Yes, my challenge was a hit, but if you want to see my first challenge look at this.
