Hello, this is about what you work best with, what you know and feel comfortable as medium/media. Are you a dry or wet medium artist?
How much experience you have with a medium? Is your favorite medium also the one you have the best results with or you would like to explore other media that you like very much.Tell us your art experience with different media so far.

I will begin by telling you that in the past year ( I draw almost everyday since I joined DS on March 25, 2008), I tried and became familiar with oil pastels, charcoal, watercolor, ink and brush and colored pencils. The graphite, of course, is part of my regular drawing but I have less work done in graphite than work done with all these media I explored during this year. I think I have to learn and mature in graphite but I still have a long way to go before drawing in graphite like a pro.
Nonetheless with my little graphite experience I explored other media and felt pretty comfortable especially in charcoal, Colored pencils and oil pastels, which make me a dry medium artist so far. Yet i want to be able to paint in watercolor or Chinese brush more than anything.
None of the media intimidates me and I love them all, only that the ability i have in Colored pencils for instance, is higher than that in watercolor.
I also learned that any information that a medium gives you when you work with it you take with you as a learned lesson and grow in artistic skills even if you switch to another medium. This was something I discovered while attempting watercolor. I switched to a dry medium like oil pastels and I had wonderful results in that medium like a plus of ability which I didn't have before the watercolor sessions.
That's my story. What is yours?

I would love to master pastels. I have tried but the results were less than satisfactory.

I have for years painted with oil on canvas and then quiet by my own surprise I discovered watercolor.. took me some time to figure it all out ,but after I did I rarely looked back at the oils.. I still enjoy oil painting and will from time to time drag them out and dust them off.
I came to Drawspace to learn all over again the art of pencil .. I was using my brushes to do all the things a pencil needed to do and got away from the values they brought.. Almost forgot how to draw...
I noticed that Liquid pencil was not on the list so I checked Other.. I discovered Liquid pencil a few months ago and I LOVE it.. Gives me the watercolor feel with the Graphite result..
I want to learn Pastels but have only been saying that for as long as I can remember and never dug in and dedicated time .. When I find a stopping point with what I have already started then I will devote my time and energy and do it right.

I think everyone dabbles and experiments in different media, but eventually settles into one that they become most comfortable and proficient in. That then becomes their trademark, part of their recognizable style.
Learning to use new mediums is always good, but go with what you enjoy the most and what provides results for you. That is where you will shine.
I guess I'd have to say that dry media is my first love - graphite, coloured pencil, charcoal, etc. But I do love oils too and watercolour and have done a lot with those lately. However, I think my best work comes through dry media.
