You can color in an artwork of a realistic subject with hundreds of different colors, but without an intrinsic or learned understanding of values, your painting or drawing cannot possibly appear three-dimensional. No matter what colored medium you choose, or which colors you use, you still need to use a full range of values from light to dark.
