I fully understand this concept now, and it made it easy to draw the outline once I put it in my head to ignore the details and just draw the outline of the background, and NOT my object's outline!
It's very simplistic, and still not very "good" but it's accurate in proportions, I thought, and the right shape the first time, so I was happy with it.
