RS101 Introduction to Shading

With Brenda Hoddinott

6 weeks   Shading 4

This course focuses on simple shading techniques that provide a natural progression from contour drawing to shading. Squirkling and hatching are easy-to-learn and highly versatile techniques that should be added to the shading repertoire of all artists.

Squirkling employs randomly drawn curved lines to create textured values. Hatching with straight lines works well to represent values in quick sketches or to render highly detailed shading in complex drawings.

Curriculum includes various shading-related skills including value scales, graduations, and creating original drawings. Value scales and graduations are quite different from one another even when each has an identical range of values. A value scale is made up of stand-alone values. A graduation has a range of different values that come together as a single unit.
